The NY Times - Symphony of Science

Telling the timely story of Emergent BioSolutions.

The Challenge

Tell the complex story of Emergent BioSolutions and its pathogen-busting hyperimmune globulin therapeutics in a way that would be compelling to the viewer.

The Creative Solution

Drawing orchestral inspiration from Peter and the Wolf Op. 67, we presented the story as a symphony incorporating characters identified by specific musical instruments and immersive dancing, darting visuals. Through this music driven animation, the audience is left with a clear and memorable understanding of the way Emergent BioSolutions hyperimmune therapy can work to treat infections as complex as COVID-19. We chose a look that was layered, yet organic and textured, without becoming overly polished and rigid. With such a complex subject being scored with an emotional tone, the team worked hard to keep the story human and approachable, and to ensure that there was a connection between the viewer and the message.

The Craft

We created a unique style born of 3D and 2D illustration mixed with dynamic animation. For the music, we composed an original musical symphony that parallels the process of vaccine research and development as it moves through complex staging, into mass production, and through delivery to the public.
