Olivia Thompson's World Cup Insights Head into the Round of 16

The Liberty Guild's CFO reflects on the last of the group games and gets ready for the knockout stages

Olivia Thompson's World Cup Insights Head into the Round of 16

Argentina vs. Poland. The multi time Ballon D’Or winner Lionel Messi was instrumental again for Argentina as they illustrated why they were regarded as one of the tournament favourites to set up a second-round match against Australia. Argentina completed the turnaround from the shock opening World Cup loss to Saudi Arabia by qualifying for the last 16 in impressive style against Poland - who went through on goal difference having finished level on points with Mexico.

Playing at the same time was Saudi Arabia vs. Mexico. Mexico defeated Saudi Arabia 2-1 but agonisingly went out of the World Cup on goal difference on a night of incredible drama in Doha. The raucous Saudi fans celebrated as they scored an added-time consolation goal which sent the distraught Mexicans home on goal difference instead, leaving Poland's players to celebrate across the city.

In the evening, Australia reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in 16 years after shocking Denmark. The Danes, needing victory to progress, dominated possession but were caught out on the break when Australia scored the winner on the hour mark. Denmark exited Qatar 2022 in disappointing fashion, with just one point from three games, sitting bottom of the group.

Alongside this, Tunisia faced France. Tunisia knew they needed to win the game to stand any chance of progressing and they started with plenty of intent. A magical moment from Khazri put Tunisia ahead as he opened up space for himself on the edge of the box to strike home. There was drama at the end as France had a goal ruled out by VAR for offside in the final minute of stoppage-time but Tunisia held on to register a shock victory. There was an outpouring of emotion from a large following of Tunisia fans at the stadium, while Tunisian substitutes sprinted onto the pitch in a moment of pure elation, but their celebrations were short-lived when news of Australia's lead began to ripple through the stadium.

Another day of exciting games whilst England preparations are underway for Sunday!
